Bova's Bakery

Large assortment of pastries, cookies, and bread. They also have sandwiches, calzones, and pizza squares. No sitting area.

The bread here is delicious. You must try the scali bread. It's my favorite bread in the North End. I get a large loaf and serve up half for dinner. Then use the rest the next day for French toast.

We also recommend the ricotta pie, baklava, chocolate bombs, cannoli (they have mini cannolis - I mean how great is that). Oh, all the pastries we have tried have been delicious.

Things I don't recommend: the sfogliatella (lobstertail) and the red velvet cake. The sfogliatella filling is too sweet and heavy, and the red velvet is dry and tasteless.

Their "calzones" are more like bread pocket sandwiches. They are okay and will do in a pinch. For a while, they left them out on a table where people could fondle them. It grossed me out, but thankfully, they are now behind glass where they belong.

TIP: No matter where you get a cannoli in the North End get the traditional filling. The other fillings are like vanilla and chocolate instant pudding. (This is true for all the pastry shops.) 08/08
